Billionaire Rafiq Hariri was appointed to head the new government by a presidential decree late Monday, officials at the presidential palace said.
Hariri was asked to head for talks with President Emile Lahoud at the presidential palace in Beirut's northeastern suburbs of Baabda "to be informed of the decree appointing him as prime minister," one official told reporters.
The decree entrusts the business tycoon, who was prime minister between 1992-1998, to form the new government, he said.
A majority of 107 out of 128 Lebanese MPs Monday backed Hariri to head the new government, in day-long parliamentary consultations with President Emile Lahoud, state television said -- BEIRUT (AFP)
