One person was killed and two seriously injured when robbers attacked the training camp of Nigeria's national womens' team, reigning African champions the Falcons, a team official said on Tuesday.

The robbers stormed the Gateway Hotel, Ota training camp, near the economic capital Lagos on Sunday night and attacked members of the team preparing for the Sydney Olympics, the team official, Ntiero Effiom told AFP.

"We were on our way to dinner when it all started. We just heard shooting everywhere. The shooting was heavy and persistent," he said.

He added that the robbers shot dead a driver, who was staying in the hotel, and made away with his vehicle.

Two people, including the team captain Prisca Emeafu, were injured following the confusion that arose because of the shooting.

He said the injured had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Last week, the team was drawn against world champions USA, China and Norway in a tough group for the Sydney Olympics, which begins on September 13 – (AFP)
