Opera Stars Welcomed to Bahrain by Royal Society of St. George and DHL

The Royal Society of St. George and DHL today welcomed opera performers Janis Kelly, Mark Le Brocq and Andrew West as they arrived at Bahrain airport.

This is the third location on their tour of the Middle East region, following Dubai and Qatar.  The three musicians will be performing at the DHL sponsored Opera in the Park that is being organized by The Royal Society of St. George on Thursday night at the American Express Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Saar, and will make a second appearance at la fontaine centre of contemporary art on Friday.

After two days of rain in Doha, Le Brocq commented “Our trip seems to have coincided with one of the two days of rain Qatar has each year.  The forecast looks beautifully clear for Bahrain on Thursday and Friday though which is the most important thing, as both of our concerts are outside.”

Kelly, Le Brocq and West will perform arias and duets from La Traviata and Magic Flute, as well as well-known numbers from hit musicals such as Les Miserables and West Side Story.

The musicians will have a chance to rehearse in both venues before their first performance on Thursday night.  Ms. Kelly commented, “I have never sung at an open air concert quite like this before.  It is great to have the opportunity to do something different – it sounds like ticket sales are booming too, hats off to the sponsors DHL and the Organizing Committee who have done a great job – especially as all profits go to charity.  How very thrilling it all is.”

A portion of the proceeds from the performance will go to the Al-Rahma Center in Riffa.

Organizer Emma Garrett said, “The Opera In the Park performance is a first in Bahrain and we are sure everyone will thoroughly enjoy it.  We have already sold many tickets and are expecting the event to be sold out.  The concert at la fontaine on Friday night will be different again - while at Opera in the Park people will be picnicking on blankets under the stars, the Bahrain Duty Free sponsored la fontaine concert will be more formal with a programme of British and French song, totally different to the night before.  People who attend both will have two totally different experiences.”

Phil Couchman, Regional Director, DHL Middle East said, “DHL is committed to the communities in all the markets in which we operate, and our sponsorship of this event is a result of that commitment.  That said, our sponsorship would have been pointless without the hard work of the wonderful team of volunteers at the Royal Society of St. George who have worked tirelessly to make the event possible.”
