Pakistani police said Monday they had arrested six terrorist suspects wanted for a chain of sectarian murders in the country.
A police statement said the suspects belonged to the underground Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, an extremist Sunni Muslim group blamed for a murderous campaign against the minority Shiite Muslim community.
They were arrested as police made a number of raids across Punjab province, of which Lahore is the capital.
The arrests followed the killing of a senior police official, Tariq Kambooh, for which Lashkar-i-Jhangvi has claimed responsibility.
Kambooh was gunned down along with his driver in Lahore on Saturday in an ambush by two assailants.
He was one of dozens of police officers on the group's hitlist because of their investigations into attacks and murders involving the outfit, police said.
