The Palestinian Democratic People’s Party, FIDA, which is part of the Palestinian authority, called in a statement issued Saturday for forming a national unity government to include members of the PLO’s executive committee in addition to qualified persons at the national level.
According to FIDA, the new government “should work on a comprehensive plan, that includes the implementation of the [PLO] central council decision to declare a Palestinian state.”
The statement also said that one of the tasks of the would-be government is to stand in the face of the Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank and Gaza under the so-called Racial Segregation Plan.
Israel occupied east Jerusalem in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and annexed it immediately, a move never recognized internationally.
FIDA also called for integrating all official and popular efforts towards escalating the Intifada and to “vary the forms of popular activities.” However, the party disagreed with resorting to strikes, either complete or partial, considering that as “self-punishment,” that would lead to paralyzing the economic life.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian factions which formed a joint leadership of the Intifada issued a statement Saturday declaring that “the Intifada is the only option that would save our Palestinian Cause, from a whirlwind” after the peace negotiating proved futile.
The 12 factions called on the Palestinians to mark the first month-anniversary of the uprising with “an overall escalation throughout the governorates of the homeland, through rallies demanding an end to the occupation.”
In the statement, the Palestinian leaders renewed their call for “the Arab states to cut off all political and economic relations with the Israeli enemy,” and to use the oil weapon to press the US for taking a non-biased position.
