Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas is set to visit the Syrian capital city of Damascus in September, Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath said Saturday, adding that the Palestinian leadership wanted to strengthen coordination with Syria and Lebanon on the Middle East peace process.

"Syria is to welcome Abu Mazen in September and he will meet several Syrian officials, notably President Bashar al-Assad," Shaath told reporters following talks in Damascus with his Syrian counterpart Faruq al-Shara.

Palestinian-Syrian "coordination begins today, because the difficult period we are going through right now requires the highest degree of coordination and consistent contacts."

According to AFP, Shaath said he hoped to see more meetings between Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian officials to "achieve coordination and collaboration between the three sides to help them liberate their lands and make progress towards the just and lasting peace we are seeking." (Albawaba.com)
