Some 7,000 Palestinian refugees demonstrated Tuesday in northern Lebanon against the participation of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at the Middle East peace summit in Egypt.
About 4,000 refugees marched through the streets of Beddawi refugee camp, while another 3,000 rallied in the Nahr al-Bared shantytown against the summit at Sharm el-Sheikh, which they claim is aimed at aborting the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada.
In the southern port city of Tyre, some 50 Palestinian doctors organized a gathering in front of the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Forces in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) to denounce the "barbaric Israeli army."
"It is totally unconceivable that Israeli soldiers fire on children and on ambulances in the Palestinian territories," one of doctors, Mohamad Ataya, told AFP.
The doctors gave a UNIFIL officer a letter for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
"We ask for an international protection for our people and for the children of Palestine, who are the victims of a war of extermination on their own land," the document said.
On Monday, hundreds of Palestinian refugees held a demonstration in Ain el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon, to protest the summit at the Egyptian resort -- TRIPOLI (AFP)
