A Palestinian teenager was shot dead early Sunday in central Gaza Strip near the border with Israel, Palestinian Interior Ministry officials said. In a separate incident Sunday morning, Israeli occupation troops shot and wounded a Palestinian activist in Al Yamoun village near Jenin, Israel Radio reported.
Hospital sources in Gaza identified the dead teen as 16-year-old Hamad Hamdan of Deir el-Balah.
Meanwhile, Israeli security forces were put on high alert status Sunday, 48 hours before the opening of polling stations, as more than 70 warnings of planned attacks were registered, Israel Radio reported. Fears in Israel have mounted that Palestinian groups and mainly the Islamic Jihad, will try to carry out attacks ahead the general elections on Tuesday.
Police spokesman said 22,000 uniformed and undercover officers would deploy at city entrances and at shopping malls and other public sites deemed possible targets.
