Pelosi: In Jordan, We Build on 60 Years of Friendship to Work Together for Peace in the Middle East
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey arrived yesterday in Jordan as part of an official trip to the region, where they were received by Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan. Pelosi and Holt traveled to Qatar today.
"I'm very grateful for the hospitality of King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, and the friendship shown to all Americans by the people of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan," Pelosi said. "As we observe the 60th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the U.S. and Jordan, our nations continue to work together in the search for regional stability, combating terrorism and furthering the Middle East peace process. Under King Abdullah's distinguished leadership, Americans have a strategic ally and partner in Jordan."
Speaker Pelosi and Congressman Holt met with Jordanian Senate President Zaid Al-Refai and the Lower House Speaker Abdulhadi Al-Majali to discuss mutual security issues. Senate President Al-Refai announced the formation of a Jordanian-American friendship group in the Senate to continue to build on the 60-year relationship between the two allies.
On Friday, Pelosi and Holt toured Prince Faisal Hospital in Rusaifa to examine a new obstetric and neo-natal department funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. With assistance from USAID, Prince Faisal Hospital's newly-renovated delivery ward, obstetrics and pediatrics departments, and operating facilities are now equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. USAID has been active in Jordan since 1952 and has provided nearly $250 million in grants to improve the health sector since 1997.
The delegation traveled to Qatar today, visiting the Al Udeid Air Base, home to CENTCOM Forward Headquarters and the Combined Air Operations Center. They were briefed by military leaders on operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, and met with members of the Armed Services.
A senior Member of the Intelligence Committee, Congressman Holt is the Chairman of the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, which was created at the start of the 110th Congress in January 2007 by Speaker Pelosi. The panel is working to strengthen oversight of the intelligence community by ensuring that policymakers receive accurate assessments, civil liberties are safeguarded, and the intelligence community is protecting Americans.
