US air strikes continued for a third night in Afghanistan Tuesday, blasting the airport in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar, as the militia's units fired on planes over Jalalabad.

"Strikes continue," an unnamed official told AFP.

Earlier Tuesday, CNN reported that new US air strikes were underway against the impoverished country.

The Qatar-based Al Jazeera satellite channel reported that four bombs fell Tuesday on Kandahar airport, to the east of Afghanistan, in what seemed to be the start of the third consecutive day of US attacks.

The airport has been a target in the ongoing US bombing of the country in retaliation for the September 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.

No further details were available.

Meanwhile, Taliban officials said their anti-aircraft guns fired on planes over the eastern city of Jalalabad on Tuesday.

"Our batteries are firing all around the city," a Taliban official told AFP by telephone.

Jalalabad airport was badly hit by US air strikes on Monday night and Taliban officials told AFP that an ammunition dump had been destroyed.

The US and its allies are working to form a "broadly based" government to replace the Taliban militia, which in 1996 restored order to most of Afghanistan after years of factional infighting – Albawaba.com
