France's World Cup and Euro 2000 winning midfielder Robert Pires has signed a four-year contract with English Premiership side Arsenal, he told France 2 TV channel Monday.
"I have signed a four-year deal with Arsenal. I am happy, I have a new club and I am happy to link up again with my French friends," said Pires in a reference to the large French contingent at Arsenal who are coached by Arsene Wenger, who hails from Alsace.
Simultaneously Arsenal released a statement confirming the signing of the Marseille playmaker alongside an earlier deal for Brazilian Edu, signed from World Club champions Corinthians of Sao Paulo.
Arsenal had faced a tough battle with Real Madrid to capture the services of Pires, who first came to prominence with Metz.
Pires joins fellow World Cup and Euro 2000 winners Emmanuel Petit, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry at the London club.
