Israel’s attorney general, Elyakim Rubinstein has instructed the state prosecutor to investigate whether statements made by MK Mohammed Barakeh before Bir Zeit University students called on Arab-Israelis to participate in the current Palestinian violence against Israel, reported the Haaretz newspaper.
Last week, Rubinstein informed MK Barakeh that the prosecutor intended to indict him on charges of assault against a police officer and offending a state official, said the paper.
Barakeh said Saturday that his statements at Bir Zeit University did not differ from statements he made repeatedly in Israel, most often on the Knesset floor itself.
Barakeh said his statements do not violate the law because he did not say that Israeli-Arabs had a right to participate in the violent clashes in the territories.
"If the legal advisor relies on the translation of (the television news program) 'Mabat,' he needs to find someone who understands Arabic," Barakeh told the daily -- Albawaba.com
