An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale shook the western part of Java Island, including the Indonesian capital on Wednesday, causing panic among residents.
The quake, centered in the Indian Ocean some 230 kilometers (142.6 miles) southwest of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, hit at 4:32 pm (0932 GMT), the meteorology headquarters here said.
The tectonic quake centered at a depth of 33 kilometers under the seabed caused light damage in Pandeglang southwest of Jakarta where a mosque dome began to lean dangerously, a meteorological official said.
Police in Pandeglang said there were no immediate reports of casualties but added that coastal villages south of Pandeglang, could not be reached by telephone.
The earthquake was also felt in Bandung, Sukabumi, Garut and Tasikmalaya, all towns in West Java, telephone operators said.
None said they had heard any reports of damage or casualties
