Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City’s Ramadan Shoe Box Appeal tops Dhs 875,000 in two weeks

7,000 shoe boxes filled as community rallies support for construction workers

As the Holy Month of Ramadan draws to a close, more that 7,000 construction workers in the emirate of Dubai can look forward to a gift in form of a shoe box filled with personal items.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City confirmed that this year’s Ramadan Shoe Box Appeal has topped its half-way target just two weeks into the six-week campaign.

“The campaign team have received just over 7,000 boxes, donations worth a value of Dhs 875,000, and the momentum from individuals and organisations looks set to continue,” said Pasquale Baiguera, General Manager, Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City.

“A number of schools have shown wonderful enthusiasm with children, faculty and parents joining hands help us meet the campaign target,” said Baiguera. He advised that this year’s campaign has its sights set on 10,000 boxes, up 25 percent on last year.

Elle of the Roger and Elle duo at Helping Hands, the organisation behind the concept said that the campaign reaches out to the emirate’s construction workers ‘who are very much the silent backbone of Dubai’s city infrastructure’.

“A simple, smart and engaging idea such is the Shoe Box Appeal shows it ability to mobilise community engagement for a community cause,” she said. Helping Hands is joined by key organisations, including TECOM, City 7 TV, Union Papers Mills and Strategic Solutions.
The logistics partners are DHL, a long term associates of Helping Hands.

The campaign runs till September 30, 2009 and also marks the annual Responsible Business month for Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City.

Shoe Box Appeal donors’ share why they support the 2009 campaign

We want our children to appreciate how fortunate they are and that they can help make even a small difference to the lives of people less fortunate than themselves in this way. Our children and staff are very much sharing the spirit of Ramadan through their efforts,” said Tim Waley, Principal of Raffles International School, West Campus Dubai.  The school raised Dhs 96,000 worth of donation boxes, 800 in total, after they opened for new school year.

“We are building a sense of community at The Galleries through a series of tenant relations initiatives that encourage new friendships and enhance business relationships.  The Ramadan Shoe Box Appeal brought together tenants who have recently moved into the office towers at the development. Between them, they donated scores of boxes,” said Christo Diamandopoulos, Senior Operations Manager at The Galleries.
Limitless, the Dubai-based master developer, collected nearly 200 boxes through its tenants at The Galleries at Downtown Jebel Ali.

• All individuals, groups and communities are invited to participate.
• Fill any number of boxes; the more the merrier in the drive to achieve the target of 10,000 boxes, up 25% on 2008
• Collect empty shoe boxes from the main reception at the Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Media City, or any of the TECOM collection points, between 9 to 6 pm, Sunday to Thursday
• The list of items is available with each box
• No food or money is to be placed in the shoe box
• Filled show boxes are accepted at Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Media City, as well at TECOM collection points.
