The Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip was closed on Tuesday after a three day opening. Palestinian media claimed that around 2,000 Palestinians, including humanitarian cases, left the Strip in that time.
Since the 2013 Egyptian coup d'état in which president Mohammad Morsi was ousted by General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egyptian authorities have kept the border crossing almost totally closed.
In 2015, Rafah was open for around 25 days, with this week's opening allowing for the transfer of people across the border for the first time in 70 days.
