Patriotism and nationalistic fervour reached a crescendo as thousands of people lined up at the Al Qawasim Corniche in Ras Al Khaimah to witness the National Day parade held to mark the 38th anniversary of the unification of the country.
Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, witnessed the event along with other sheikhs and senior officials from a stage set up in front of the Sheikh Zayed mosque.
The massive procession started off with a seven- horse led cavalry unit which was followed by the RAK Police band which rendered patriotic tunes with their bagpipes and drums.
As many as 38 contingents from various schools, local and federal departments, sports and arts clubs, folklore societies and expatriate associations participated in the colourful parade.
Hundreds of children, clad in the colours of the UAE national flag, released balloons into the air as they marched in front of the stage seating the dignitaries. Enthusiastic crowds lined up along the route waving flags to greet the procession.
Five motorized paragliders with huge banners bearing the portraits of UAE leaders hovered above the venue lending an air of excitement to the spectacle of national unity.
Another highlight of the event was the boat parade in which scores of vessels created a flotilla which glided through the calm blue waters of the nearby creek. The water show reflected the rich maritime legacy of Ras Al Khaimah with a variety of vessels- from roving boats and dhows to fishing vessels, patrol boats and water scooters taking part in the event.
Emirati youth danced in circles and revelled in throwing their swords high into the air and catching them while elders from various folklore societies beat drums and sang praises of UAE’s leadership and the country’s achievements. A Shohouh performance and traditional Zurfa dance added variety to the function.
