– Extending its reach in the African continent, Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone (RAK FTZ) was the headline sponsor for the International Bar Association (IBA) African Legal Forum Conference held in South Africa.

The IBA African Legal Forum is a regional conference that offers members and affiliates of the legal profession the invaluable opportunity to expand their networks of contacts and interact with peers from all over the world. It also keeps members and attending non-members abreast of developments in the legal arena.

With an international membership comprised of over 35,000 lawyers and 197 bar associations, and offices in London, Sao Paolo and Dubai, the Association is a major influence in the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession. The South African event was attended by the region's leading firms and institutions, making it a golden opportunity to widen the RAK FTZ network.

The free zone's participation in the conference further enriched the economic relationship between South Africa and the UAE. Beginning as early as 1992, exchange between the two nations developed over the years as both countries explored trade and economic ties through exhibitions, road shows and high level business delegations composed of government and business representatives, all of which have steadily resulted in infrastructure and investment growth.

RAK FTZ's sponsorship of the event and the road show it conducted during the conference introduced the various business options available at RAK FTZ for law offices, agencies and law consultants, to effectively and efficiently expand their operations in the UAE with minimum investment.

“We had a very good turn-out for the conference as we projected,” Oussama El Omari, RAK FTZ CEO, shared after the conference. He added, “The alternative business modules that we have – especially the Standard Offices and the Executive Offices, piqued their interest, and even as we speak, we continue to get more enquiries from those seriously interested in registering with RAK FTZ.”

RAK FTZ is determined to work with South Africa in reaching its full potential through international expansion. The IBA conference is only the first among a number of road shows and exhibitions planned for the region this year.
