RAK kicks off campaign to promote healthy eating habits among students

Ras Al Khaimah Parents Council under the RAK Education Zone today launched a six- month long awareness campaign to promote healthy eating habits among students in the emirate's schools.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi inaugurated the campaign with the slogan 'The Secret of my Success lies in my Food' at a function held at the Cultural Centre here.

The health and nutrition awareness campaign will cover all RAK schools and will last till September 1, 2010. It aims to wean the children away from junk foods and motivate them to adopt healthy eating habits through awareness programmes, lectures, competitions and various school events.

"The eating habit currently prevalent among children in UAE is a matter of grave concern as studies have shown rapid rise in obesity and other lifestyle related diseases. The campaign aims to enlist the support of parents, teachers, government authorities and the entire civil society to help children make better choices with regard to their food habits,", Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Mansoor, President of the RAK Parents Council, said.

He said that steps would be taken to improve the quality and nutritional value of food being supplied through the school cafeterias. "The RAK Education Zone will enforce steps to reorganize the school cafeterias and make sure that unhealthy food is not offered to students at the schools," Dr Mansoor added.

He said that instilling healthy eating habits among the young generation was of particularly importance for UAE as studies have revealed that close to 70 percent of the UAE population was overweight.

The function included various performances in which students donning fruit and vegetable figures took to the stage and sang about the virtues of having a balanced diet. A video film showing   the benefits of having a healthy diet and lifestyle was also screened. The programme also had presentations by medical experts.

Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Abdulla Hammad Al Shehi, Director of RAK Educational Zone, teachers, parents and students attended the programme.
