Relatives of jailed pro-reform Iranian journalists will stage a rally next week to protest their "illegal" detention, the state IRNA news agency said Tuesday.

It cited a statement announcing the demonstration outside a Tehran court Monday against the "long and illegal" detentions as well as the "ugly and inappropriate behavior" of judges toward relatives of the detained.

Among those signing the call for the protest was the family of Akbar Ganji, who was detained after alleging that top officials in the regime were involved in the 1998 assassinations of several leading dissidents.

Relatives have routinely complained of being denied access to their loved ones, many of them jailed since a crackdown on the press by the conservative-dominated courts was launched in April.

An Iranian MP on Tuesday charged there was a "double standard" at work against reformists amid reports that some 50 deputies had signed a motion to impeach Justice Minister Ismail Shushtari -- TEHRAN (AFP)
