Egypt's population is growing by one baby every 24 seconds, the government announced Sunday, reported The Associated Press.
The official census report from the Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics estimated an increase in total population to 113 million by 2029, said the AP.
The census said there has been an average annual increase of 1.235 million - an average of one birth every 24.4 seconds.
"The increase in the population is significant, but not alarming," said Ihab Oloui, chairman of the agency, at a press conference.
Of the 65.2 million Egyptians, an estimated 1.9 million live abroad.
The last government census in 1996 put Egypt's population at slightly above 59 million.
More than 50 percent of the total population live in Cairo and the Delta region, "an indication of the disproportion in demographic placement," Oloui said.
The lowest population density is in the southern Sinai region, said the report - Albawaba.com
