France’s big celebration on the night of winning the Euro 2000 cup went off the normal track and turned into clashes and injuries in different spots of the country.

The Riot police clashed with groups of youths on the Champs Elysees in the early hours of Monday and were forced to go tough on the hooligans who led a number of damages to the private properties.

On several occasions the police used tear gas as they charged fans, who had been flinging bottles and cans of beer towards the end of the celebrations, AFP reporters said.

Cars and motorcycles were attacked and shop windows were smashed.

Many of those involved had been watching the match on a giant screen at the Hotel de Ville (City Hall) before making their way to the Champs Elysees, the traditional focal point to toast French sporting triumphs.

Meanwhile in Marseille, several people were injured in clashes with other groups, taking part in the chaotic celebration. Many were arrested, an AFP reporter said.

The celebrations in the old port district of the southern French town, started after France won in extra-time with a Golden Goal from David Trezeguet –
