Romania's leading leftist party agreed Saturday to cooperate in parliament with one of the country's social democrat groups to stymie far-right gains in last week's general elections, party officials said.

The agreement between the leftist Romanian Party of Social Democracy (PDSR) of presidential front-runner Ion Iliescu and the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) will be signed early next week, they said.

Two opposition parties, the Democratic Party of former foreign minister Petre Roman, who had also run for the presidency, and the ethnic Hungarian Democratic Union (UDMR) are expected to voice their support for a government headed by the PDSR.

Iliescu's party has already ruled out any cooperation with the far-right Romania Mare (Greater Romania or PRM), that came second after the PDSR in last week's parliamentary elections.

The central electoral office revealed earlier the PDSR would hold 220 seats of the 485 seats while the PRM of Corneliu Vadim Tudor will occupy 121 seats in the bi-cameral legislature.

Iliescu and Tudor, first and second respectively in the first round of a concurrent presidential poll, will face each other in a run-off on December 10.

Three smaller parties won around 40 seats each, with 18 seats awarded to representatives from Romanian minorities, the commission said – BUCHAREST (AFP)
