A Palestinian leader has said that the Arab leaders’ speeches at the Cairo emergency summit “were different from those at previous summits because the they have realized the nature of the current circumstances, and the plight of the Palestinian people.”
“Despite the discrepancies in the stands and proposals of the Arab states, there has been some action,” said Sameer Ghosheh, member of the Executive Committee of the PLO, and leader of the Popular Struggle Front.
In an exclusive statement to Albawaba.com, Ghosheh added that despite the fact that what has been proposed at the summit so far “is not up to the Arab masses’ expectations, it is in the right direction, and we should give the summit a chance until it concludes to best evaluate the outcome.”
However, it is not the decisions that count, he said. “Rather, it is the implementation of the decisions” that the people are looking for.
The PLO official said that the addresses to the summit by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, and Syrian President Bashar Assad carried positive implications.
“The Saudi position was remarkable,” he said, voicing hope that “all Gulf States follow suit by ceasing normalization of relations with Israel and support the Palestinian people politically and financially.”
“Besides, we saw in President Assad’s speech new positive horizons towards the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions…the President’s commendation of the struggle of the Palestinians may be seen as a good start to strengthen the relations between Syria and the PLO.”
