Further underscoring their commitment towards building greater awareness about green products among the region’s students, SANYO Gulf FZE, and the leading NGO in the UAE, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), announced the winners for the second wave of the battery collection campaign in schools.
SANYO Gulf FZE, a subsidiary of the global electronics and environmental energy giant SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. partnered with EEG on World Environment Day earlier this year to promote environment-friendly technology and to ensure efficient waste management.
Speaking at Gitex 2006, EEG Chairperson and Board Member of the UN Global Compact Habiba Al Marashi emphasized the importance of involving children as well as companies such as SANYO in significant community initiatives.
“Our programs are specially designed to involve the participation of different sectors of the community in environmental activities.” Al Marashi said. “We are delighted with our partnership SANYO’s towards spreading awareness among today’s youth about protecting our ecological system. Concern for the environment instilled in the young minds of today will take root and bear rich dividends for the generations of tomorrow”.
The recently concluded month-long joint campaign, which received an enthusiastic response from the student community in Dubai, focused on educating both children and their parents on how to dispose of dry cells (one-time-use disposable batteries) in an ecologically safe manner. During the campaign, students were invited to collect dry cells from their homes and from friends – an effort that succeeded in gathering over 5000 dry cells from the 9 schools participating in the campaign.
“SANYO’s commitment to a healthy and safe environment is a cornerstone of the company’s global strategy and is in line with our ‘Think GAIA’ vision, which seeks to harness technology to build a sustainable earth.” Tetsuji Okui, Managing Director at SANYO Gulf FZE declared, “SANYO seeks to genuinely promote the interests of society and consumers. Our partnership with EEG reflects our commitment to restore a beautiful world for our children to enjoy.” Okui added.
As part of the initiative, students from nine schools in Dubai were asked to collect used dry cell batteries, which were later disposed off in an ecologically-safe method. Dubai Gem Private School emerged as the school whose students collected the most dry cell batteries while HH Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Pakistani School Dubai and Gulf Indian High School took second and third place respectively. All participating schools were awarded in recognition of their efforts.
In addition to their innovative rechargeable eneloop batteries, SANYO will showcase the all-new Real 2k (2048 x 1080) Full High Definition Projector PLV-HD2000 with 36 Bit color reproduction for outstanding image quality and the VPC-HD1A – High quality, HD movie camera that makes High Definition movies possible in a compact body, at GITEX this year. SANYO will also showcase the VPC-CG6, a slim light-weight digital movie camera that offers movie and still photography capabilities in a single product and the PLC-XU110 high brightness portable wireless projector. SANYO’s displays at Gitex 2006 will include a range of powerful multimedia projectors and top-of-the-range digital cameras.
