A Saudi prince has decided to pay for the education of the brothers of a Palestinian boy whose death in a Gaza shootout shocked the world, an Arab diplomat said here Wednesday.

The diplomat, speaking anonymously, said Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdel Aziz, secretary general of the Saudi tourist authority, would cover the school and university expenses of the brothers of Mohamed Jamal Al-Durra.

Israel's Deputy Defense Minister said in Athens Wednesday the shooting of Mohammed, 12, by Israeli soldiers on Saturday was "a mistake".

"I can say very, very clearly: it was a mistake which was not caused by intention" to kill, Sneh said.

The traumatic television footage provoked reactions of horror and shock, including from US President Bill Clinton.

The boy's father, Jamal al-Durra, appealed to the world Tuesday to help him avenge his son's death.

"I also plan on taking Israel to the international courts and ask that the criminals responsible for the death of my son be punished," the father of seven said from his hospital bed in Amman.

Saudi newspapers said Wednesday the kingdom had decided to open its hospitals to wounded Palestinians and has already sent its first consignment of medicines to Gaza – RIYADH (AFP)
