German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called Wednesday on his colleagues to have the courage to sacrifice their national interests at the EU summit in Nice in order to succeed in building a united Europe.
"We have to have the courage to put them (national interests) in second place," Schroeder said during a visit to Poland.
"Let us concentrate on the European dimension," he said.
The German chancellor said Warsaw was the best place to put forward his "urgent demand" that EU leaders attending the Nice summit remember Poland and other central and eastern European countries now negotiating membership and that they "succeed in the historical task of constructing a united Europe."
