A car bomb went off in central Baghdad on Monday and a suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowd as people rushed to help the wounded, killing at least 28 people and wounding 48 in the double strike, police said.

According to Reuters, the double bombing took place in the Kasra neighbourhood on the east bank of the Tigris River. Police said the death toll could rise.

According to AFP, eyewitnesses said the attack took place on a street lined with restaurants as a bus carrying school children drove past.
