The Dubai International Character and Licensing Fair, also known as Character Dubai, the first and only dedicated trade event in the Middle East for production, marketing and licensing of cartoon characters, animation, logos, films, brands, arts and designs will be launched next week starting October 27th to 29th, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The Fair is organized by INDEX Conferences and Exhibitions Organisation Establishment, a member of INDEX Holding.
The only exhibition of its kind in the Middle East will be held at Halls 6 and 7 of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre with about 210 exhibitors from over 60 countries expected to gather this year.
Abdul Salam Madani, President of Index Holdings and the Arab Asian Entertainment Content and Licensing Alliance said, “The launch of the second edition of Character Dubai along with the Dubai World Game Expo and MYCONTENT and the organising of the World Game Championship 2009 through the Dubai World Game Summit is in continuation to the success of the exhibition’s inaugural year in 2008.”
“We look forward to hosting Character Dubai 2009 as it serves as the ideal platform for professionals around the world in the licensing and character industry to gather, exchange ideas, and share the latest developments in this multi-billion dollar industry,” he added.
Laila Suhail, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Shopping Festival Office and also a consultant and member of Character Dubai Committee said, “The inaugural edition of Character Dubai in 2008 was a runaway success and we believe the 2009 edition will follow that trend. The patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is by itself an indication of the trust and support shown by HH in this first-of-its-kind exhibition that has a promising future and is rapidly developing in Dubai and the Middle East as a whole.”
Laila also added that Character Dubai acted as a means for global companies in the licensing and character industry to communicate and discover opportunities in the Middle East and at the same time gave the DSF Office a chance to interact with decision makers in the sector. She also commented on the licensing and intellectual property rights industry saying that it was one of the main pillars of the new global economy system and that events such as Character Dubai helped develop the industry locally especially in view of Dubai’s reputation in launching numerous characters, most notably Modhesh.
Apart from bringing together leading international animation producers, content creators, comics, media, advertisers, graphic designers, marketers, manufacturers, retailers, licensees, licensing agents, licensors and other decision makers and investors from the entire Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, the Indian Sub-continent, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas, Character Dubai will also host conferences featuring eminent personalities from the regional and global character and licensing industry.
Additionally, the exhibition will also see events such as the 2nd Dubai World Game Expo – DWGE (27th – 29th Oct, 2009) which is devoted to introducing a wide variety of computer games, including entertaining video games, online gaming, mobile games, edutainment & infotainment software, game related hardware, and next-generation platforms. This event also comprises an expo, networking events, Dubai World Game Summit, Cosplay Show, and World Game Championship (WGC) in cooperation with World Cyber Game (WCG). DWGE is sponsored by Crytek, One Card and Epic Games.
Gaming enthusiasts can also look forward to the World Game Championship (WGC) 2009, now on its second year that has surpassed the expected numbers of participants doubling the number from 2008. Games in the competition include Counter Strike 1.6, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, WarCraft, Guitar Hero, Virtua Tennis, Street Fighter, American High Striker, Deal or No Deal and Sega Rally. WGC is sponsored by Weyak from Etisalat, Magic Planet, Samsung, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Electronic University and MTV Arabia.
The 2nd Dubai World Game Summit presented by twofour54 will also be held in conjunction with DWGE and is the largest annual gathering of professional game developers, publishers, media, focusing on learning, inspiration, and networking. The DWGS will spotlight the local game developments and business opportunities in emerging market in the Middle East. The focus of the summit will be online games, mobile games, console games, design, audio, business and management, and visual arts.
MYCONTENT, a marketplace for co-producing, selling, buying, and distributing entertainment content, will also be showcased during Character Dubai.
Character Dubai was initiated to introduce the concept of character and licensing to the Middle East market and to forge a link between the EU, North and South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East Character and Licensing Market. The popularity of the exhibition can be gauged from the fact that in its inaugural year in 2008, the Fair attracted more than 10,000 visitors from 42 countries, 173 participating companies, and resulted in deals worth more than $100 million.
