Almost all Shiite paramilitary troops have left Tikrit after reports that the soldiers looted the city, Iraqi local officials told Reuters on Saturday.
Within hours after the Iraqi government said its fighters, with the help of Shiite forces, liberated Tikrit of Daesh (ISIS), the Shiite troops' rampage on the city began, according to Reuters. Local officials said the thefts left hundreds of homes looted or torched.
Tikrit council head Ahmad al-Kraim said the looting stopped when federal and local police "became responsible for Tikrit's security." Eighty percent of the volunteer troops have already left.
"The situation is now calm," a police major told Reuters.
Some witnesses said local Sunnis were also involved in the looting, but the allegations are unconfirmed.
The city had been liberated of Daesh after a month of battles between Iraqi forces and the extremist group.
