Lebanese politicians close to Damascus and Tehran have revealed that American consultants had suggested October as a date to resume the deadlocked Syrian-Israeli peace talks.
The sources added that it’s very likely that the impasse in the talks, which froze last December, will be resolved after the Israelis and the Palestinians reach a framework agreement.
Syrian President Bashar Assad had told US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that it would not take him long to return to the negotiation table.
At the meeting, which took place in June during the funeral of late president Hafez Assad, Bashar said that he needed only a few weeks “to arrange the internal house.”
The Lebanese sources, who have been on a visit to Damascus lately, told Albawaba.com that meetings took place in New York between leaders of American Jews and Iranian officials taking part in the UN Summit last week.
The sources, who declined to be named, believed that the developments would have a direct and substantial impact on the peace process in the region, referring to the role of the Lebanese Hizbollah in the process.
“The improvement in the relations between Tehran and the Jews all over the world, and consequently with Israel, is an indicator of a future role Iran would play in the peace process and in changing the world Muslims’ view of the Jews, and Israel.”
