Southern Sun’s global properties commemorate Africa’s leading hotel group’s warm brand of hospitality
Southern Sun Hotels announces their milestone reached of 40 years as the leading hospitality group in Africa and as a highly respected global brand, with properties in South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Mozambique, Dubai and Nigeria adding to the group’s international portfolio and a ranking within the top 50 hotel groups worldwide.
Southern Sun Group made its foray into the Middle Eastern region at the beginning of 2007 by opening the first two hotels in the Downtown Burj Dubai precinct – Southern Sun; Al Manzil and Qamardeen Hotels. The hotels have emerged as market leaders in their competitor set, and two of the most popular business and leisure hotels in the region – Al Manzil Hotel was recently named an Expedia Insider’s Select Hotel in 2009 by being chosen to be among the world’s top 1% of hotels as well as being voted the Top Business Hotel in Dubai in the TripAdvisor Business Popularity Index 2009.
Founded in 1969 by Sol Kerzner and South African Breweries, Southern Sun’s current portfolio comprises a collection of over 80 properties – offering top-quality accommodation and delivering the ultimate in deluxe travel to discerning guests.
“40 years ago, the Southern Sun group was created with a vision to be Africa’s top performing hotel group. The past four decades have not only seen the group achieve that title, but grow from strength to strength – building a successful domestic operation across a broad portfolio of budget and luxury properties, and pursuing a global expansion strategy with hotels in the Middle East, the African continent and the islands of the Indian Ocean, with plans for further expansion in West Africa and beyond,” says Richard Weilers, Managing Director, Southern Sun.
“Southern Sun owes its remarkable success to its loyal guests and its dynamic and dedicated team. Thousands of people have enjoyed special and memorable experiences at our various properties over the years, and we hope to give them, and a new generation of Southern Sun guests and staff, the chance to experience our warm brand of hospitality by commemorating this momentous milestone,” Weilers continued.
Wholly owned by Tsogo Sun Holdings – one of South Africa’s most successful entertainment and hospitality groups – Southern Sun combines local favourites with some of the world’s most respected hotel brands including Southern Sun Deluxe Hotels; Southern Sun Hotels and Resorts; Garden Court; Sun Square; StayEasy by Southern Sun; Southern Sun Lifestyle Resorts; Formula 1 and Formula Inn; InterContinental Hotels; and Holiday Inn.
