Strong 5.3-magnitude earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands Region

ALBAWABA - online reports revealed that a strong 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region, the Volcano Discovery website revealed on Wednesday.

It reported that the strong earthquake hit the South Atlantic Ocean 142 km (88 mi) from  South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands on July 31, 2024.

According to sources, the quake occurred at around 3 a.m. local time (GMT -2) and had a shallow depth of 35 km but no one felt it, according to initial reports. 

Additional earthquakes were also reported in several other locations such as Greenland, Japan, California, Alaska, and New Zealand, as reported on X.

SSGEOS said there's a significant probability of a higher magnitude earthquake occurring in the next two days and could reach a magnitude of about 6 or 7.
