The detained Sudanese opposition leader Hassan Turabi, Secretary General of the National Public Congress (NPC) is not above the law, and his party will be banned until the judiciary gives a final ruling over the issue, according to Sudanese Vice President Osman Mohammad Taha.
In a statement to the London-based Arabic daily Asharq Alawsat on Sunday, Taha said that the alliance announced between Turabi and John Garang, leader of the southern rebels “reached the level of a criminal association according to Sudanese and international law.”
Turabi is still detained in one of Khartoum’s jails pending court hearings. He was arrested last month after he declared an understanding with Garang’s Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA). Hundreds of his deciples are reported to be in custody, too.
Turabi fell out with President Omar Bashir in December 1999, although the Islamist leader was considered the spiritual father of the Salvation Front which brought Bashir to power in 1989 – Albawaba.com
