A suicide bomb vehicle targeting an army checkpoint near Damascus killed at least sixteen soldiers Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Syria's state news agency, SANA, reported that the fatal blast occurred in the suburb of Jaramana, a predominantly Christian and Druze area considered loyal to President Bashar Assad.

Syrian rebels, whose supporters largely come from the country's Sunni majority, control many of the other surrounding areas in the countryside around Damascus.
