Syria's new President Bashar Assad agreed Wednesday to supply Jordan with much-needed water, reported the United Press International (UPI), quoting presidential spokesman, Jibran Kourieh.
Kourieh said that during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah, President Assad approved "to secure what possible water to brotherly Jordan and this in coordination between water authorities in both countries."
King Abdullah paid a brief visit to Damascus Wednesday and congratulated
Bashar Assad for his election as Syria's new president, replacing his late father President Hafez Assad who died on June 10th.
Last year, Syria pumped 8 million cubic meters of water to Jordan, despite its own severe water shortage, said the agency.
King Abdullah and President Assad held two rounds of talks, including a closed meeting, during which they discussed a number of Arab and regional issues as well as bilateral ties, the agency added.
They agreed to hold a meeting of the Syrian-Jordanian Higher Committee as soon as possible and to activate trade exchange between the two neighboring countries, the agency said - Albawaba.com
