ALBAWABA - Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said that Damascus said that negotiations with Israel were successful and that Syria will ink a security agreement "in the coming days," Reuters reported late Wednesday.
Reuters quoted al-Sharaa, who stressed that the "security deal" doesn't mean normalizing ties with Israel.
In addition, AFP said, citing an official at Syria's foreign ministry, Damascus will strike several security and military agreements with Israel before 2026.
The official told AFP, "Primarily, these would be security and military agreements." He added that the Syrian government is pressuring Tel Aviv to strike "an agreement to halt military operations inside Syria".
Syria and Israel are holding talks to reach an agreement, which Damascus hopes will ensure a halt to Israeli airstrikes and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from areas they have advanced into in southern Syria.
The president of Syria said that Israel has carried out more than 1,000 airstrikes on Damascus and more than 400 ground incursions since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime on Dec. 8.
