Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is due in Egypt Sunday to discuss the Arab-Israeli peace process with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, sources close to Mubarak said Wednesday.

It will be Assad's first trip abroad since he became president in July following the death a month earlier of the then president and his father, Hafez, Syrian diplomatic sources told the Egyptian government newspaper Al Ahram.

Assad and Mubarak were to discuss advancing the peace process, strengthening Arab solidarity and developing bilateral relations, the sources said.

When US President Bill Clinton visited Cairo on August 29, Mubarak said the situation was ripe for a resumption of the Israeli-Syrian negotiations, which have been suspended since January.
