Damascus –

Syria's ruling Baath party affirmed Sunday that the party will hold its landmark congress “without delay.”

Sources at the national leadership of the party denied previous statements by some Baath figures saying the congress was to postpone its June 17th because of the death of president Hafez Assad.

The sources said the congress will go ahead in order to approve the decision of the party leadership to propose Bashar Assad as secretary general of the elite party.

They added that the parliamentary speaker, Abdul Kader Kaddura, confirmed that the People’s Assembly will convene in an extraordinary session on June 25th to elect Bashar as president.

However, Reuters reported that the "congress might be cut to two or three days instead of the planned five, due to the president's death," quoting a senior Baath official.

The sources told that the parliament will submit Bashar’s candidacy to the people who will give their opinion by referendum -
