Bangladesh Foreign Secretary CM Shafi Sami left Sunday for Russia on a three-day official visit aimed at furthering Dhaka-Moscow relations, the official BSS news agency reported.

Sami would be the first top foreign ministry official to visit Moscow since 1998, it said, adding the trip would pave the way for "a visit by the political leadership at higher level."

Since Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971, the last high-level visit to Moscow was in 1972 when then-president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, slain father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, visited the then Soviet Union.

Mujibur was killed along with most of his family members in a violent coup in August, 1975, when his post-independence government was toppled -- DHAKA (AFP)
