Woodruff, the defending champion, was bounced 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 here Wednesday by fellow American Mardy Fish, an 18-year-old competing in only his second ATP event.
Australian qualifier Scott Draper upset 35-year-old Pozzi 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the 375,000-dollar event.
In other upsets, Dutchman Peter Wessels ousted sixth seed David Prinosil of Germany, 6-4, 7-5, and Jens Knippschild of Germany eliminated eighth seed Laurence Tieleman of Italy 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.
Fifth seed Jason Stoltenberg of Australia advanced to his third quarterfinal in four years here by dispatching compatriot Dejan Petrovic 6-3, 6-2, while another Aussie, seventh-seed Wayne Arthurs, downed American Bob Bryan 6-3, 6-4.
Third seed Paul Goldstein of the United States dumped Tuomas Ketola of Finland, 6-3, 6-1, and fourth seed Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden improved to 8-2 on grass this season with a 7-6 (8/6), 6-0 victory over Germany's Christian Vinck.
Quarterfinal matches Thursday find Goldstein meeting Stoltenberg and Draper taking on Knippschild while Friday's lineup pits Arthurs against Fish and Bjorkman against Wessells – (AFP)
