Tunisia’s last warm-up match before the World Cup in Germany ended in defeat on penalties against Uruguay.t
In Saturday’s final of the US$100,000 LG Cup, Tunisia coach Roger Lemerre tested a second string team against Uruguay opposition also lacking many of its stars.
Despite the absence of big name players, the final produced plenty of excitement with Uruguay twice striking the post. Tunisia’s David Djemmali scored from a corner kick but the goal was disallowed. Teammate Karim Essediri also went close, blasting a long-range shot that tested the Uruguay keeper.
Uruguay dominated most of the game and would have prevailed in normal time but for the skills in goal of Hamdi Kasroui. Uruguay’s Nicolas Oliveira twice failed to score into an unmarked goal, but Tunisia’s luck ran out when it came to penalties and Uruguay took the US$50,000 winners cheque with a three-one win.
Libya met Belarus in the tussle for third place earlier in the evening before a capacity crowd at the National Stadium in Rades. The match also went to penalties after Libya’s Saed Ahmed levelled the score at one-one with just 30 seconds remaining. Libya emerged four-two victors after spot kicks.

The LG Cup is the biggest corporate event for soccer in the Middle East and Africa, entertaining thousands of fans across the region. The first LG Cup tournament was held in Tunisia in 1997.
Entry for spectators attending both days of the LG Cup was free. LBC TV, Channel 7, and Belarus TV satellite channels aired all four matches on May 30 and June 2.
