Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has affirmed the "inalienable" right of Tunisians to bear passports and travel without restriction, official sources declared Saturday.

"Every citizen has the right to a passport and the right to exercise his freedom to travel. That is an inalienable right," Ben Ali declared.

Human rights groups have repeatedly accused the government of intimidating opponents by confiscating or failing to renew passports, a practice that has recently won international attention following a hunger strike by Tunisian journalist Taoufik Ben Brick -- TUNIS (AFP).
