Turkish Armed Forces have conducted an air operation in the Hakurk region of northern Iraq, killing 20 PKK militants.

According to security sources who cannot be named due to security reasons, the operation started late Tuesday as PKK fighters were spotted by drones.

Turkish Armed Forces killed the militants with F16 warplanes.

The PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU – resumed its 30-year armed campaign for autonomy in July 2015, following the collapse of a ceasefire.

Since then, nearly 600 Turkish security personnel, and more than 5,000 PKK fighters, have been killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
