A Turkish young girl has appealed to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer to persuade her family to continue her college education and stop them from forcing her to marry, reported the Turkish Daily News on Tueday.
The parents of Tuba Uykan, 17, in Guzelova village, wanted to marry her to a neighbor after she had completed her school education.
Tuba refused to marry and instead asked her parents to let her continue her education, said the paper.
Young Tuba then wrote in despair to President Sezer asking for help. In her letter she wrote she did not want to marry like the other girls in the village, but wanted to continue her education and become a lawyer like President Sezer, said the paper.
A letter arrived bearing the president's signature.
"Your letter has touched me. I will do whatever is necessary to provide you with an education," was the reply.
Tuba will now take preparatory lessons and if she passes her exams will be put into a college, the paper added.
Village deputy headmaster, Raha Kahyalar, said that none of the girls in the village are given an education, adding that he hopes Tuba can set an example to the other girls – Albawaba.com
