Dubai's police force has announced a 90 percent drop in narcotics smuggling cases, with just four cases last year compared to 75 in 1999, Gulf News reported.

Brig. Sharaf Al Din Mohammed Hussain, the assistant general commander for criminal investigation, was quoted by the paper as saying that “the number of criminal cases in the emirate was 18,282 last year compared with 17,744 in 1999.”

"The number of drug abuse cases was 527 last year compared with 337 in 1999," he added.

According to the daily, Hussain attributed the drop in narcotics smuggling to efforts by security officials, the criminal investigation department, the UAE Anti-Narcotics Committee and the Coast Guard – Albawaba.com
