Three more people died of Ebola fever in the northern Ugandan town of Gulu in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 71, the health ministry said at 8:00 am (0500 GMT) Saturday.
Fourteen more people with symptoms of the highly contagious disease reported to Gulu hospitals in the same period, bringing the total number of known cases to 205, the ministry said in a statement.
"The increase in the number of cases is due to the intensified active case search districtwide," the statement said.
Health teams have in the past two weeks been scouring Gulu district for new and unreported cases of Ebola, a deadly form of haemorrhagic fever, in a bid to bring the epidemic under control.
Six more people have discharged from hospital since Friday after fully recovering from the disease. A total of 79 Ebola patients have recovered.
"We continue to receive reports of suspected cases from other parts of the country. They are being investigated promptly. None of them are cases of Ebola," the statement said – KAMPALA (AFP)
