After UNESCO voted to include Palestine as a member in 2011, the U.S. withdrew funding but remained a part of the agency, including maintaining an office at UNESCO in Paris and weighing in on policy matters, as all UNESCO states do.
The decision to leave UNESCO comes on condition of anonymity and has not been confirmed by the White House at the time of publication. It also comes as UNESCO is voting on the election of a new director.
