Manchester United's coach, Alex Ferguson, wants to sign Inter Milan's Christian Panucci defender for 6 million pounds, hoping to strengthen the ‘Red Devil’ side.

The twenty-seven-year-old star led two double European Cup winners, one with AC Milan and the other with Real Madrid.

Panucci, has leapt to the top of Ferguson's wanted list after the Tottenham Hot Spurs declared that United's prime target, Sol Campbell, will not be leaving White Hart Lane until next summer at the earliest.

Ferguson has dismissed speculation that he will stay on as manager after his contract expires and has also kept his eye on Fiorentina goalkeeper Francesco Toldo despite recent public declarations that he may stay in Florence.

United bought Massimo Tiabi, the goal-keeper from Venezia for 4.3 million pounds last August but after a discouraging time at Old Trafford, starting over, he returned to Italy on loan to Reggina. Tiabi was the goalie when Chelsea defeated them 5-0 and further back also failed with Milan.

If Campbell does not agree with the new terms, Tottenham face the prospect of losing the 14 million pound rated 25 year-old.

In addition, Manchester wants to sign Chelsea's Norwegian scorer Tore Andre Flo and has already signed Van Nesteroy from Netherlands's Eindhoven – Albawaba.com
