The death toll for an avalanche in Afghanistan north of Kabul rose to at least 108 people, emergency officials told AP and AFP Wednesday.
Most victims were in the Panjshir province, where 90 people have died from the heavy snowfall over the past two days, provincial governor Abdul Rahman Kabiri told AFP. But the avalanches buried homes across four northeast provinces.
Kabiri said rescuers used their bare hands and shovels to try to save those who were buried. Casualties were still expected to rise, Natural Disaster Management Authority Deputy Director Mohammad Aslam Syas told AP.
AP reported the lack of infrastructure has taken a toll on Afghanistan, where there aren't many protections for emergency situations outside of major cities.
