United States Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met on Monday with Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher in preparation for the arrival of Jordan's King Abdullah in Washington on Thursday, the State Department said.

The meeting was in the framework of a series of discussions on the Middle East that will be taking place this week in Washington, said State Department Deputy spokesman Philip Reeker, according to SPA. Those discussions are expected to continue next week, also, when Secretary of State Colin Powell is to meet with a Palestinian delegation.

"We consult regularly with the Jordanians," Reeker said, "regarding our regional efforts, and certainly look to today's meetings as part of that process." Reeker added that Jordan’s King Abdullah would be meeting with State Department officials as well as with US President George W. Bush this week.

Also on the agenda, he stated, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is expected to have separate meetings both at the State Department and at the White House this week. "This is part of the close consultations we're having with the parties, with regional leaders, regarding our support for Palestinian civil reform, renewal of security cooperation, and the resumption of a political dialogue," Reeker concluded.
